Tide pool

Description

This piece is an oil painting using lacquer thinner and mineral spirits to substantially thin out oil paints. Using gravity to distribute the paint, I allow them to pool as they will, creating this, uh, thing. An interesting fact about lacquer thinner is that it's really pretty thick, much thicker than mineral spirits, so it sinks under the mineral spirits when they are poured together, and when next to each other, they leave dry canvas, creating the white outlines in the painting. I unintentionally used earth tones for the thicker, lacquer thinner based colors, which created for me a real pull between the thicker 'land mass' areas and the thinner both in substance and color 'water' areas. It also took FOREVER to dry, as despite surface solidity, the lacquer thinner underneath remained liquid, forcing me to pierce the skin and drain out the underlying liquids.

This enabled me to peal back certain areas and both redistribute and eliminate areas of color. It was surpisingly involving for something that started out as random puddles on a 15x15 canvas.
